Frequently Asked Questions About Water Leaks

What causes water leaks to occur?

The most common cause of leaks in the home are from leaking toilet flappers, dripping faucets, water heaters, and other faulty valves. Fortunately these are easily reparable. Other times, though, a leak can be more serious – like a burst pipe or sewer main leak. In that case, the restoration may be a bit more difficult. But don’t worry! Boyd Plumbing can handle it no matter how extensive.

How much water can be wasted if I have a leak in my home?

It’s possible for leaks to account for about 10,000 gallons of wasted water in the home every year. Not sure how much 10,000 gallons of water really is? It’s about enough water to fill a swimming pool.

Wow, that’s a lot! In order to prevent that, I need to know how to spot a leak, right?

Right! And luckily, there are a few easy ways you can determine whether or not you have a leak in your home – if you have an unusually high water bill, if your water meter is changing with no fixtures turned on, or if your toilet is not functioning properly. Slab leaks have similar signs, except you’ll also notice things like mold growing under the carpets, wet or hot spots on the floor, and the sound of running water even though everything is off.

I know I have a leak, but I can’t find it. How will Boyd Plumbing determine the location?

At Boyd Plumbing, we have all the latest in leak detection equipment in order to find the problem area as quickly and efficiently as possible. We will use one of four methods – ultrasonic detection, video camera inspection, infrared, and smoke inspection. Each of these methods also cause the least amount of destruction possible. Trust us, if you have a leak, we’ll find it guaranteed or it’s free!

Once we know where the leak is, how will Boyd Plumbing repair it?

Great question! We have three options – traditional repair which requires excavation of your landscaping, pipe bursting, or slip lining. We can’t completely rule out the traditional method because there are may be times when all we can do is dig in order to reach the pipes. However, whenever possible, we will always go with the two non-invasive approaches. Pipe bursting involves sending a piece of equipment with a head shaped like a cone into your pipes. This equipment tears apart and pushes aside the old plumbing. We will then attach new plumbing to the end of the device and pull it through the void to make your pipes like new. When we use slip lining, we put a smaller pipe within your existing one so that water flows more freely.
