Garbage Disposal Replacement in Sacramento

To Keep Your Disposal for Longer, Read This List of What Not to Do

A garbage disposal is one of those appliances that you can easily take for granted until you have a problem. One of our customers called us because his disposal continually backed up and he became tired of having to keep clearing it of clogs.

These are a great convenience for any home… when they work. In order to avoid costly repairs and replacements, here are some things you should absolutely not do when it comes to your disposal:

  1. Don’t grind glass, plastic, metal, paper, anything combustible, corn husks, celery stalks, onion skins, artichokes (anything really fibrous), animal bones, or cigarette butts.
  2. Don’t pour grease, oil, or fat. Grease not only clogs drains but also affects the disposals grinding ability.
  3. Don’t use hot water when grinding food waste. It causes grease to liquefy and, again, clog the drain.
  4. Don’t turn off the motor or water until grinding is complete. In fact, leave the water running for 15 seconds after you shut off the disposal.
  5. Don’t put too many potato peels down the disposal.
  6. Don’t put large amounts of food down it at one time. Feed it into the disposal little by little with the cold water running so it flows freely down the pipes.
  7. Don’t use harsh chemicals like bleach or drain cleaners because they can damage blades and pipes.

Now that you know what not to do, all that’s left is to tell you what to do if you ever need garbage disposal repairs or replacements – call Boyd Plumbing!
