Try These Unclogging Methods Before Calling a Professional

If you have the time and patience, there are a few different methods that you can use to remove a clog from your kitchen sink.

  1. If the clog is close to the drain and caused by grease, ladle out as much of the water or other liquid from your sink as possible. Then, pour about a half a cup of dishwashing soap down the drain and follow that with 8-10 cups of boiling water. Let the mixture sit until the water has cooled completely. The clog should be gone by that time, but if it’s not, call a professional.
  2. If the clog is due to something else, try using a plunger to clear it out first. You have to be very careful that you push gently, however. If you use too much force you could damage your pipes. If you have a double sink, have someone cover the adjacent opening with a stopper. Discontinue plunging if you can’t remove the clog after two or three minutes.
  3. You can also try removing the drain trap to get to the clog if it’s farther down and you don’t mind getting a little dirty. Clear your cabinet, turn off the water, and put down several towels as well as a bucket. Use a large pair of pliers and gently turn the nut located on the trap, which is an S-shaped pipe. Once the pipe is removed, check to see if you can find the obstruction. If you still can’t find the clog, then you’ll want to call a plumber.

Call Boyd Plumbing today and we’ll take care of any sort of kitchen sink clog that you may be experiencing.
